When reading, spelling or writing feels harder than it should, children can quickly begin to believe that they’re simply “not good at English.”
But struggling with literacy doesn’t mean a child isn’t capable. Often, it means there are underlying skills that haven’t yet become secure, and they need to be taught in a way that makes sense for that child’s learning needs.
At Flying Colours Education, our Primary Literacy Intervention provides targeted, evidence-based support for children who need more than additional practice.
Using explicit, systematic and carefully sequenced teaching, we identify the skills that are getting in the way of progress and build an individualised learning pathway designed to close gaps, strengthen foundations and help children experience success.

When literacy feels harder than it should
Literacy difficulties can look different for every child. You may notice that your child is working hard but still finding some aspects of reading, spelling or writing difficult.
Reading feels slow or effortful
Reading may be hesitant, tiring or take considerably more effort than expected.
Guessing instead of decoding
Your child may guess words from pictures, context or the first letter rather than confidently sounding them out.
Spelling doesn't seem to stick
Words may be spelt differently each time, even after they have been practised many times.
Writing becomes something to avoid
Getting ideas onto paper, constructing sentences or completing written tasks may feel overwhelming.
Learning doesn't seem to stick
Skills your child appeared to understand yesterday may be difficult to recall or apply another day.
Understanding what they've read is difficult
Your child may be able to read the words but struggle to explain, remember or make meaning from the text.
They're working hard but falling behind
Despite effort, extra practice or support at school, the gap between your child and their peers may continue to grow.
Confidence is starting to suffer
You may hear “I’m dumb,” “I can’t do this,” or “I hate reading,” as repeated difficulty begins to affect confidence and motivation.

More Than Tutoring
When a child is struggling,
more practice isn’t always the answer.
At Flying Colours, we go beyond helping children keep up with their current classroom work. Our literacy intervention is designed to identify the underlying skill gaps that may be making reading, spelling or writing difficult — and then explicitly teach those skills from the foundations up.
We look at what your child already knows, where the gaps are and what needs to come next, creating an individualised pathway that builds skills progressively and systematically.
Through ongoing assessment, teaching and review, we adapt intervention as your child progresses — helping them develop stronger literacy foundations, greater independence and renewed confidence in themselves as learners.

Literacy support that targets the right skills
Literacy is made up of many interconnected skills, and difficulties can occur at different points along the way. That’s why we don’t offer a one-size-fits-all literacy program.
Our Primary Literacy Intervention is delivered through two targeted programs. Children are placed in the program that best matches their identified learning needs and may progress to another program as their skills develop.
