What changes for our students who learn differently?

We’ve supported many students as they make the move from primary school to high school, and we’ve seen first-hand just how significant this transition can be — particularly for children who learn differently.

Year 7 brings more than a new uniform, new teachers and a new timetable. Academic demands increase, students are expected to work more independently, organisation becomes increasingly important, and there are significant social and emotional changes happening at the same time.

For students who have needed additional support with their learning, this can be a particularly important time to provide consistency while so much else around them is changing.

That’s why this term, our Parent Information Session is focusing entirely on the transition to high school.

We’ll explore what really changes in Year 7, the skills students need to manage those changes, and how parents can help their child feel prepared, supported and increasingly independent.

You’ll also hear real perspectives from current high school students and parents from our Flying Colours community, along with insights from our team and counsellor about the academic, organisational, social and emotional transition.

Most importantly, this evening isn’t about keeping children in learning support longer than they need it. Our goal has always been to build independent learners. It’s about making thoughtful decisions about support based on what each child needs — rather than simply because they’ve reached the end of Year 6.
