Our Approach to Numeracy Intervention
Building understanding, not just answers
Mathematics can be complex and abstract, and children don’t all develop mathematical understanding in the same way or at the same pace.
Our Numeracy Program brings together four key elements; Number Sense, Discovery, Multi-Sensory Experiences and Curriculum Content to help children develop stronger mathematical understanding and build connections between what they are learning and why it makes sense.
Our program has been uniquely developed to accompany the NSW Mathematics Syllabus, with a strong emphasis on number sense as an important foundation for ongoing mathematical learning.
By combining carefully targeted teaching with opportunities to explore, discover and experience mathematical concepts in different ways, we aim to make learning more accessible, meaningful and engaging for children with a range of learning needs.
Because when maths starts to make sense, children don’t just build stronger skills. They begin to see themselves differently as learners.
When maths feels harder than it should
Numeracy difficulties can look different for every child. You may notice that your child is working hard but still finding numbers, calculations or mathematical concepts more difficult than expected.
Numbers don't make sense
Your child may find it difficult to understand quantities, compare numbers or recognise how numbers relate to one another.
They still rely on counting
They may continue to use their fingers or count from one for calculations that other children are beginning to solve more automatically.
Number facts don't seem to stick
Addition facts, number bonds or times tables may be difficult to remember, even after lots of practice.
Place value causes confusion
Reading, writing, ordering or working with larger numbers may become difficult as the maths becomes more complex.
They know a method but not when to use it
They may know how to follow a familiar method but become unsure when they need to choose which strategy to use.
Word problems feel overwhelming
Working out what a question is asking, identifying the relevant information and deciding which operation to use may be difficult.
They're working hard but falling behind
Despite effort, practice or support at school, gaps in understanding may make it increasingly difficult to keep pace as new concepts are introduced.
Confidence in maths is starting to suffer
Repeated difficulty may lead your child to say “I’m bad at maths” or avoid maths altogether.
Recognise some of these signs? It doesn’t necessarily mean your child has a learning difficulty.
Children can experience numeracy difficulties for many different reasons. What matters is identifying where the gaps are, understanding what your child needs and providing targeted support before frustration and low confidence take over.
More Than Tutoring
When a child is struggling,
more practice isn’t always the answer.
At Flying Colours, we go beyond helping children keep up with their current classroom work. Our numeracy intervention is designed to identify the underlying skill gaps that may be making maths difficult and then explicitly teach those skills from the foundations up.
We look at what your child already knows, where the gaps are and what needs to come next, creating an individualised pathway that builds skills progressively and systematically.
Through ongoing assessment, teaching and review, we adapt intervention as your child progresses, helping them develop stronger numeracy foundations, greater independence and renewed confidence in themselves as learners.

Numeracy involves much more than being able to complete calculations. Children need to understand how numbers work, how mathematical ideas connect and how to apply what they know in different situations.
Difficulties can occur at different points in this development, which is why our numeracy intervention isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Discovery Learning
Creating opportunities to explore, investigate and make mathematical connections.
Discovery experiences allow children to explore concepts, notice patterns and develop understanding through guided investigation, helping mathematical ideas become meaningful rather than simply something to memorise.
We build on children’s natural curiosity and love of learning. Through guided discovery, children experience “wow moments” when ideas click into place.
Multi-Sensory Experiences
Making abstract mathematical ideas more concrete and accessible.
We incorporate visual, auditory and hands-on experiences to help children explore mathematical concepts in different ways, make connections and strengthen their understanding.
