Children’s Counselling

At Flying Colours Education, our experienced counsellors support children and teenagers to better understand themselves, manage their emotions and navigate the challenges they may face at school, at home and in everyday life.

Lisa and Michelle work closely with children and young people to create a safe, supportive and engaging space where they can talk openly, build self-awareness and develop practical strategies to manage their thoughts, feelings, relationships and behaviours.

Through counselling, children are supported to:

  • build confidence and self-belief

  • improve emotional regulation

  • strengthen peer relationships

  • develop resilience and coping skills

Our approach is always positive, supportive, and tailored to each child’s individual needs.

Sessions are available face-to-face at our Cardiff location, with school-based sessions also available where appropriate.

If you’re noticing your child struggling, even in small ways, early support can make a meaningful difference.

Children’s Counselling for Learning Difficulties and Well-being

Many parents think counselling is only for crisis situations.

In reality, counselling for children can play a powerful role in supporting emotional well-being, building confidence, and helping children manage learning difficulties before they become overwhelming.

At Flying Colours, our counselling support is designed to help children develop the skills, resilience, and self-belief they need to thrive — both at school and in life.

Why Your Child Might Need Counselling

  • Learning difficulties

  • Low confidence

  • Anxiety and overwhelm

  • Emotional regulation

  • Friendship difficulties

  • School refusal or avoidance

  • Family breakdown

  • Grief and loss

Counselling vs Learning Support: What’s the Difference?

When your child is struggling, it can be hard to know what kind of support they actually need.
You might be wondering whether it’s something academic, something emotional – or a combination of both. The truth is, both counselling and learning support play an important role, but they support children in different ways.

Benefits of Counselling for Children

Counselling supports more than just one area of your child’s development.

It helps children build confidence, manage their emotions, and develop the resilience they need to navigate both learning and life.

When children feel supported and understood, they are more likely to engage, persist, and begin to see themselves as capable learners.

In the video below, our counsellor explains how counselling supports children beyond crisis.

Counselling: Supporting Your Child’s Emotional Well-being

Counselling focuses on how your child is feeling.

It gives them a safe, supportive space to:

  • Talk about what’s going on for them

  • Work through worries or frustrations

  • Build confidence and self-belief

  • Learn how to manage big emotions.

For children struggling with learning, these emotional challenges are often just under the surface – even if they don’t always show it.

Learning Support: Building Skills and Confidence in Learning

Learning support focuses on the skills your child needs for school.
This includes:
  • Reading and Literacy

  • Writing

  • Numeracy and maths

  • Learning strategies and organisation

It helps your child understand how to learn, so they can start to experience success and feel more capable in the classroom.

Why they Work Best Together

In reality, learning and emotions are closely connected.
When a child is struggling at school, it often affects how they feel about themselves. They might lose confidence, become frustrated or start avoiding tasks that feel too hard.
At the same time, if a child is feeling anxious or overwhelmed, it can make learning even more difficult.
When counselling and learning support are combined:
  • Children build the skills they need

  • They develop the confidence to use those skills

  • They feel more supported, capable and motivated

This is where we see the biggest changes – because we’re supporting the whole child, not just one part whole child, not just one part of their experience.

Is This the Right Support for Your                                Child?

If you’re noticing your child struggling — whether it’s with learning, confidence, or managing their emotions — you’re not alone.

Many parents aren’t sure what kind of support their child needs, and it can feel overwhelming trying to figure out the “right” next step.

The good news is you don’t have to work it out on your own.

At Flying Colours, we take the time to understand your child as a whole — how they are learning, how they are feeling, and what support will make the biggest difference for them.

Sometimes that means counselling.
Sometimes it means learning support.
And often, it’s a combination of both.

  Take the First Step

If you’re concerned about your child, even in small ways, it’s worth having a conversation.

Early support can make a meaningful difference — not just in your child’s learning, but in their confidence, well-being, and overall experience at school.
